Mohamed Salah has returned to Liverpool training following his Africa Cup of Nations campaign, as the club steps up preparations for their UEFA Champions League encounter against Marseille.
The Egypt international took part in a light training session with his teammates on Tuesday at Liverpool’s training centre, easing back into action ahead of the midweek European fixture.
Salah’s return has drawn significant attention after his outspoken comments earlier this year, in which he criticised the club over his treatment. The forward accused Liverpool of “throwing him under the bus” after he was left out of the starting lineup for three consecutive matches and claimed he had no personal relationship with manager Arne Slot.
Despite the controversy, Salah featured as a substitute in Liverpool’s 2-0 Premier League victory over Brighton on December 13, where he registered an assist. Slot later played down the incident, stating that the club had moved on from the situation.
Speaking last week, the Liverpool manager said he was pleased to have Salah back in the squad but declined to reveal details of their private discussions. Slot also admitted uncertainty over whether the 33-year-old would be involved in Wednesday’s Champions League match against Marseille in France.
Liverpool currently sit ninth in the Champions League league phase standings. The top eight teams secure automatic qualification for the round of 16, while clubs placed between ninth and 24th must compete in a play-off round for progression.
Salah was instrumental last season, scoring 29 league goals to claim the Premier League Golden Boot as Liverpool cruised to a record-equalling 20th English league title. However, the forward has struggled to replicate that form this campaign, managing just four goals so far.
