Peter Obi: Political Leaders Responsible for Nigeria’s Challenges

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has said Nigeria’s political leaders bear major responsibility for the country’s ongoing challenges, blaming poor governance for the mismanagement of the nation’s vast resources.
Obi made the remarks on Sunday while speaking at a Thanksgiving service to mark the 50th anniversary of Oyo State, held at St Peter’s Cathedral, Aremo, Ibadan.
According to him, Nigeria is not lacking in resources but has suffered due to leadership failure. He urged Nigerians to continue praying for those in positions of authority, asking that their hearts be guided towards responsible use of public funds.
“I want to appeal to Nigerians to remember us politicians in your prayers. We are the problem of Nigeria. Nigeria is not a poor country; it is poorly governed,” Obi said.
He further called on political leaders to embrace accountability and prioritize the public good, noting that such a shift would significantly improve the country’s fortunes.
“Please pray that God will touch our hearts to use public money for the public good. If we do this, Nigeria will be good,” he added, while offering prayers for the congregation and their families.
The former Governor of Anambra State also commended the development of Ibadan, describing the city as historically significant and intellectually rich. He noted that the city has played a vital role in shaping Nigeria’s past and continues to symbolize knowledge and hope.
“Ibadan is a very historic town where many Nigerians were formed several years ago. It is a city of knowledge and a city of hope,” Obi said.
He praised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for what he described as visible progress and urban transformation across the state, particularly in Ibadan.
Obi expressed optimism about the future of Oyo State as it marks its golden jubilee, praying for sustained growth and exemplary leadership in the years ahead.
“As Oyo State celebrates 50 years, I pray that the next 50 years will be even more exemplary. May God Almighty continue to bless the governor, his family, and members of his team,” he said.
