PDP Faction Urges Senate to Fast-Track Electoral Act Amendments, Warns of Repeat Election Flaws

ABUJA — A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called on the Senate to urgently conclude amendments to the Electoral Act, warning that continued delays could plunge Nigeria into another problematic election cycle.
Mohammed Haruna Jungudo, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, expressed the party’s concerns on Wednesday, stressing that the slow pace of legislative action sends a troubling signal at a time when public trust in the electoral process remains weak.
According to Jungudo, timely amendments to the Electoral Act are critical to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral framework and restoring confidence among voters.
“The Senate and the National Assembly must appreciate the urgency of these amendments and ensure their swift passage in order to improve our electoral system and processes,” he said.
He cautioned that postponing the reforms would only worsen existing shortcomings and further undermine voter confidence ahead of future elections. Jungudo emphasized that lessons from the 2023 general elections must not be ignored.
“Nigeria should not be allowed to enter another election cycle without correcting the flaws that became evident during the 2023 polls,” he added.
The PDP’s position aligns with growing demands from other political stakeholders and civil society organisations, who have consistently called for comprehensive electoral reforms to prevent a recurrence of the controversies that characterised the last general elections.
