The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a woman for allegedly administering a poisonous substance to a minor following a dispute with the child’s mother in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Akure.
According to Jimoh, the incident was reported on Thursday, February 5, at the Odigbo Police Division by the victim’s mother, Rofiyat, aged 32. Both the complainant and the suspect are residents of Omifon community in Odigbo.
He said the incident occurred on Wednesday, February 4, at about 8:30 a.m., when the suspect allegedly gave the child, identified as Abdulrasheed, a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous.
“The act was reportedly carried out following a misunderstanding between the complainant and the suspect, who is the complainant’s landlady,” Jimoh stated.
He explained that shortly after ingesting the substance, the child began vomiting and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received urgent medical attention.
Following a swift, intelligence-led operation, police detectives arrested the suspect. During the course of investigation, the liquid substance allegedly administered to the child was recovered.
DSP Jimoh added that the suspect is currently in police custody and has made useful statements to aid the investigation.
He noted that investigation is ongoing and that the case will be charged to court upon its conclusion.
The spokesperson further revealed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, warned residents against landlord–tenant disputes, noting that such disagreements often lead to poor coexistence and could escalate into criminal acts.
CP Lawal also urged residents of Ondo State to remain law-abiding and continue to cooperate with the police by providing timely and credible information, assuring the public that the command remains committed to ensuring justice in all cases.
