The Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Professor Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, officially commissioned a solar-powered energy project valued at ₦3.1 million in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering.
The project, facilitated and attracted by the Head of Department, Dr. Theophilus Alumona, was made possible through the support of friends and well-wishers of the department. It comprises a 7.5KVA inverter system, four high-capacity tubular batteries, and eight 650-watt solar panels designed to provide stable and sustainable power supply to the department.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Prof. Anyaehie commended Dr. Alumona for his proactive leadership and commitment to infrastructural development within the department. He described the initiative as a reflection of dedication, resourcefulness, and strong administrative drive, noting that such efforts demonstrate the qualities of a hardworking and visionary academic leader.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the solar installation represents a strategic step toward addressing persistent power challenges within the university. He noted that reliable energy supply is critical to engineering education, research, laboratory work, and innovation, stressing that the project will significantly enhance academic and practical activities in the department and, by extension, the Faculty of Engineering.
Prof. Anyaehie further urged other Heads of Departments to emulate Dr. Alumona’s initiative by seeking partnerships and alternative funding sources to drive development in their respective units. He reiterated the university management’s commitment to supporting innovative solutions that improve teaching, research, and institutional growth.
The commissioning marks another milestone in UNIZIK’s efforts to strengthen infrastructure and promote sustainable energy solutions within the institution.
