PORT HARCOURT — Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has died at the age of 64.
He reportedly passed away on Thursday after a brief illness. Although the exact cause of his death and the location where he died had not been officially announced as of press time, family members confirmed that relatives and associates are grieving his loss.
There were claims from a source that the senator had been flown overseas for brain surgery after he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. However, this information had not been independently confirmed.
Until his death, Mpigi was known to be a close political ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The late lawmaker was from Tai Local Government Area and belonged to the Ogoni ethnic nationality in Rivers State. Before his time in the Senate, he served two terms in the House of Representatives, where he represented the Eleme/Tai/Oyigbo Federal Constituency.
He was elected into the Senate as a member of the 9th Assembly and was re-elected into the 10th Assembly, where he served until his passing. He also chaired the Senate Committee on Works during his time in office.
A source who confirmed the development expressed deep shock over the senator’s death, describing it as painful and difficult to accept.
“We are shocked over this news. I am short of words. I don’t know what to say. We are in pain,” the source said.
