Peter Obi Thanks Nigerians for Support After Alleged Assassination Attempt in Benin

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep appreciation to Nigerians both at home and abroad for their overwhelming support following an alleged assassination attempt on him and other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City, Edo State.
In a statement posted on his X account on Thursday, Obi said he was touched by the outpouring of prayers, calls, and solidarity he received after the incident, which occurred at the party’s office in the Edo State capital.
“I am profoundly grateful to Nigerians from around the world for your prayers, calls, and solidarity following the incident at the ADC office in Benin yesterday,” he said.
Obi also extended his sympathies to the families of former Edo State governors, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Professor Oserheimen Osunbor, who were affected by the attack. He acknowledged their contributions to national development and appreciated Nigerians for standing by them during the difficult period.
“I especially appreciate your support during this difficult time for the family of the distinguished elder and former Governor of Edo State, Chief John Oyegun, who has served Nigeria honourably in various capacities, as well as for another former Governor, Professor Oserheimen Osunbor,” Obi stated.
The former governor noted that the solidarity shown by Nigerians had strengthened his belief in the country’s future and the goodwill of its people.
“Your support has strengthened my faith in our shared humanity and our collective hope for a better Nigeria,” he said, adding that his gratitude had further reinforced his resolve to continue serving the nation.
Reflecting on his past political journey, Obi said he was no stranger to insecurity and violence, recalling that similar experiences in Anambra State influenced his decision to run for governor.
“Experiences of lawlessness are not new to me. Years ago, the violence and insecurity in Anambra shaped my determination to seek the governorship of the state, convinced that leadership must restore order, security, and public trust,” he said.
He warned that Nigeria was facing an increasing breakdown of law and order and urged citizens not to give in to fear but to rise with courage and responsibility.
According to him, the current situation demands active participation from citizens who desire positive change.
Quoting the Greek philosopher Plato, Obi said, “The price good people pay for refusing to participate in government is to live under the rule of bad people.”
He further urged Nigerians to be intentional in choosing their leaders, emphasising the need to elect individuals with competence, integrity, and compassion.
“This moment urges Nigerians to be even more resolute in electing leaders defined by competence, commitment, character, and compassion – leaders who prioritise the nation above self and service above power,” he said.
Obi concluded by calling for unity among Nigerians, stressing that collective effort was necessary to achieve peace, security, and prosperity.
“Together, with courage and unity, we can build the peaceful, secure, and prosperous Nigeria our people deserve,” he said.
