King Charles Commends Nigerians in UK During State Banquet with President Tinubu

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has begun a two-day state visit to the United Kingdom, receiving full ceremonial honours as he was welcomed at Windsor Castle on March 18, 2026.
During a royal banquet at the historic St George’s Hall, King Charles III praised the significant contributions of Nigerians living in the UK, describing them as central to British growth, innovation, and culture.
“We in the United Kingdom are blessed that so many people of Nigerian heritage, having chosen Britain as their home, are now at the heart of British life,” the monarch said, highlighting Nigerians’ achievements in business, technology, academia, law, science, sports, literature, and the arts.
King Charles recalled meeting numerous “quiet heroes” within schools, businesses, the National Health Service, and universities, including young people who have benefited from initiatives such as his King’s Trust over the past 50 years.
Adding a lighter note, the King recounted a recent reception at St James’s Palace, where he hosted members of the Nigerian diaspora for a jollof and tea gathering, jokingly debating whether the dish was Nigerian, Ghanaian, or Senegalese in origin.
Reflecting on his first visit to Nigeria 36 years ago, King Charles noted the profound influence Nigerians now have on British culture—from Afrobeats in concert halls and Nollywood on screens to stars in the Premier League and members of the judiciary. “Let me propose a toast to the President and people of Nigeria. Naija no dey carry last,” he said.
President Tinubu was received with traditional state pageantry, including a guard of honour and ceremonial gun salute, underscoring the strong diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The visit will include high-level meetings with British officials, engagement with the Nigerian diaspora, and discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, boosting trade and investment, and enhancing cooperation in key areas such as security and education.
