The All Progressives Congress (APC) has intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections following the successful conduct of zonal congresses across the six geopolitical zones, where party leaders were largely returned unopposed and strong backing was declared for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The congresses, described as peaceful and well-coordinated, served as a platform for party stakeholders to reaffirm unity, consolidate structures, and signal readiness for the next electoral cycle.
North-Central Backs Tinubu as Sole Candidate
In the North-Central zone, party stakeholders formally endorsed President Tinubu as their sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election during the congress held in Lafia, Nasarawa State.
The endorsement was led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and seconded by Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule. The motion received unanimous support from party leaders, including governors and ministers.
Akume described the North-Central as a pivotal region in Nigeria’s political landscape and expressed optimism about its electoral strength. He, however, urged party members to remain proactive and committed, warning against complacency despite growing confidence in victory.
Governor Sule linked ongoing development projects in the state to federal reforms, noting that improved economic conditions have enabled states to execute projects without resorting to borrowing.
South-West Re-elects Kekemeke, Promises Strong Electoral Performance
In Lagos, the South-West zone re-elected Dr. Isaac Kekemeke as zonal chairman through consensus at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, with over 3,000 delegates in attendance.
Kekemeke pledged improved performance and assured that the region would deliver overwhelming support for President Tinubu in 2027. He also expressed confidence in securing victories in Ekiti and Osun states as part of broader electoral goals.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the congress as free, fair, and peaceful. He emphasized the importance of unity and strategic planning in maintaining the South-West’s status as a stronghold of the APC.
South-East Re-elects Arodiogbu, Signals Growing Influence
In Enugu, the South-East APC re-elected Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu as National Vice Chairman alongside other executives through consensus.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, said the process reflected the collective will of party members.
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, described the development as evidence of the party’s expanding influence in the region. He commended party leaders for strengthening its structure and fostering unity.
Similarly, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, noted that the consensus approach aligns with the party’s constitution and promotes internal cohesion.
South-South Re-elects Giadom, Targets Highest Votes
In Asaba, Delta State, the South-South zone re-elected Chief Victor Giadom as National Vice Chairman alongside other officials through consensus.
Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, commended the region’s growing unity and urged party members to position the South-South as the highest vote-delivering zone in the 2027 elections.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, described the congress as a reflection of the party’s strength and readiness for future political contests, calling for sustained grassroots mobilisation and stronger engagement with the public.
North-East Adopts Consensus in Leadership Selection
In Gombe State, the North-East APC also adopted a consensus approach in electing its zonal leaders. The congress attracted key stakeholders, including governors, lawmakers, and party executives.
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, described the exercise as a constitutional process aimed at strengthening party unity and leadership structures.
Party Moves Forward United
Across all zones, the APC demonstrated a unified front, with leaders emphasizing internal cohesion, grassroots mobilisation, and strategic planning as critical to achieving electoral success in 2027.
The widespread adoption of consensus candidates and endorsements highlights the party’s effort to minimise internal conflicts while building momentum ahead of the next general elections.
