Nigeria’s Samson Adamu has been named Acting General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), marking a significant administrative shift within African football’s governing body.
The announcement was made on Sunday by CAF President Patrice Motsepe during a press briefing in Cairo, following a meeting of the organisation’s executive committee.
Adamu steps into the role following the retirement of Veron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo, who had served as General Secretary since March 2021. Mosengo-Omba, now 66, had faced criticism for remaining in office beyond CAF’s stipulated retirement age of 63.
During his tenure, he was also the subject of internal complaints from staff who alleged an unhealthy working environment. However, a subsequent investigation into the claims did not find evidence of misconduct.
Adamu brings considerable experience to his new position. Since 2018, he has served as CAF’s Director of Competitions, overseeing the planning and execution of major continental tournaments. His role included supervising flagship events such as the Africa Cup of Nations as well as CAF’s interclub competitions.
Reacting to the development, the Nigeria Football Federation congratulated Adamu in a statement shared on social media, describing the appointment as a proud moment for Nigerian football.
His appointment is expected to ensure continuity in CAF’s operations, given his deep familiarity with the organisation’s structures and competitions.
