Benue Governor Alia Condemns Fresh Gwer Attack That Killed Nine, Vows Justice

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has strongly condemned the fresh attack in Gwer East Local Government Area of the state, which claimed the lives of nine persons.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor described the incident as barbaric and completely unacceptable, stressing that it poses a serious threat to the peace and security of the state.
According to the statement, the attack was allegedly carried out by suspected armed herdsmen on the people of Mbalom in Gwer East LGA.
Governor Alia said the violent assault was a direct affront to the collective peace and safety of Benue communities, adding that his administration remains fully committed to protecting lives and property across the state.
He expressed deep sympathy to the families of the victims and assured them that the government stands firmly with them in this difficult time.
The governor also raised concern over what appears to be a disturbing pattern of calculated and selective attacks in parts of the state, noting that the acts of violence have become increasingly complex and persistent.
He, however, maintained that such criminal acts would not be allowed to thrive in Benue.
Alia reaffirmed his unwavering resolve to confront and subdue every form of criminality threatening the safety and stability of communities in the state.
He commended security agencies, especially the Nigeria Police Force, for their swift response to the incident and their continued efforts in tracking down those responsible.
The governor noted that security operatives have assured the state government that they are on the trail of the perpetrators and would ensure their arrest and prosecution.
He further urged the security agencies to intensify their operations to prevent a recurrence and bring lasting relief to the affected communities.
Despite the security challenges, Governor Alia assured residents that his administration would not relent in its responsibility to safeguard lives and property.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Gwer Local Government Area, Timothy Adi, confirmed that the attackers invaded the village on Holy Saturday between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Adi disclosed that one person sustained critical injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
He also revealed that there had been prior security alerts and advisories indicating that the terrorists were planning an attack.
According to him, he immediately informed the state Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Enemari, who promptly visited the affected area to assess the extent of the destruction and deployed officers to restore calm.
He added that the area is currently peaceful following the intervention of security personnel.
