The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna.
According to the statement, the decision was reached following extensive deliberations at a meeting between the commission and the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
Haruna stated that after reviewing the matter, the commission resolved to shift the exercise to a later date in order to focus fully on preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Following deliberations, the commission resolved to postpone the exercise until after the 2027 General Election,” the statement read.
The voter revalidation exercise, which was expected to take place nationwide, is aimed at updating and verifying the voter register to ensure the credibility of the electoral process.
With the postponement, INEC is expected to channel its attention towards strategic planning, voter education, and other key preparations necessary for the successful conduct of the 2027 polls.
The commission, however, assured stakeholders and the public that further updates regarding the revalidation process will be communicated in due course.
