The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has warned officers of the Nigeria Police Force that acts of recklessness, abuse of power, and impunity will no longer be tolerated, declaring a new era of professionalism within the Force.
He delivered the message on Thursday in Uyo during the passing-out parade of 1,068 retrained constables at the Police Mobile Force Base, 26 PMF.
According to the IGP, the retraining programme represents a significant shift in policing standards, stressing that it is not a routine exercise but a deliberate effort to reposition the Force for more responsible and effective service delivery.
He noted that an untrained or undisciplined officer carrying a firearm poses a serious threat to public safety, while a properly trained and disciplined officer remains a protector of lives and property.
Disu also commended the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for its initiative in retraining female officers in weapons handling, describing it as a progressive step that reinforces the fact that competence in policing is not determined by gender.
Reaffirming the relevance of Force Order 237, he emphasised that the use of firearms must remain a last resort and must always be proportionate and within the confines of the law.
Referencing his nationwide address delivered on April 29, 2026, the IGP made it clear that officers found guilty of unlawful killings or misuse of weapons will face immediate dismissal and prosecution.
“Impunity ends now. Any officer who misuses a firearm or unlawfully takes a life will be dismissed and prosecuted. No officer will be shielded by uniform or rank,” he said.
He further cautioned officers against extortion, reporting for duty under the influence of alcohol, and the reckless handling of firearms, warning that offenders would face strict disciplinary measures, including criminal prosecution.
The newly retrained constables were urged to uphold discipline, show restraint in the use of force, and maintain respect for the rights of citizens as they return to active duty.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Mohammed Azare, disclosed that some of the retrained officers have been selected to serve in the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit, aimed at tackling violent crimes across the state.
He also highlighted recent achievements of the Command, including the safe evacuation of explosive devices at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Centre and the successful rescue of kidnapped victims along the Calabar–Oron waterways through coordinated efforts with other security agencies.
Dignitaries present at the event included senior police officers and government representatives.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reiterated its commitment to community policing and encouraged residents to support security efforts by providing timely and credible information. It also assured the public that complaints of misconduct will be properly investigated and addressed.
