President Bola Tinubu has pledged to place Nigeria on what he described as an “irreversible path of economic expansion and democratic consolidation” if re-elected for another four-year term.
The President made the declaration on Sunday in Abuja while delivering his acceptance speech after emerging as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 election.
Tinubu secured a landslide victory in the party’s presidential primary, defeating his only challenger, businessman and APC chieftain Stanley Osifo. He polled 10,999,162 votes, while Osifo received 16,503 votes.
The results were announced by Chairman of the APC Presidential Primaries Election Committee, Senator Pius Anyim.
Speaking after receiving the party’s flag and certificate of return from APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, Tinubu expressed appreciation to party members and supporters for their confidence in his leadership and renewed his commitment to national development.
He said the mandate placed on him by the party would further strengthen his resolve to continue implementing policies aimed at economic transformation and national progress.
“In accepting this nomination, I renew my commitment to serve our nation with even greater determination,” the President said.
He added that with another term in office and sustained national cooperation, his administration would focus on strengthening the economy, accelerating industrialisation, improving energy security, expanding infrastructure, ensuring food sufficiency and deepening democratic values.
Tinubu also acknowledged the economic challenges many Nigerians have faced since the implementation of major reforms under his administration, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy and the foreign exchange reforms introduced in 2023.
The President admitted that the reforms came with painful consequences but maintained that difficult decisions were necessary to rebuild the nation’s economy.
“You have given me encouragement. Sometimes it is difficult, and I share the pain with you. I understand what it means to reform an economy that was struggling. If Nigerians have lost sleep, I have too,” he said.
Reflecting on his journey to office, Tinubu said he remains committed to fulfilling the responsibility entrusted to him by Nigerians.
“In 2022, I asked for this job, you supported me, and I got it. Therefore, I must continue to do the work,” he stated.
The President further highlighted several initiatives introduced by his administration, including reforms in education, taxation and infrastructure development.
According to him, over ₦282 billion has already been disbursed to approximately 1.5 million beneficiaries through the student loan programme.
Tinubu also promised to improve electricity supply across the country and create greater opportunities for young Nigerians and businesses as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin.
On security, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling insecurity and vowed to intensify efforts against banditry and other criminal activities across the country.
The President further urged Nigerians to remain focused and avoid complacency, warning against allowing political actors without practical alternatives to derail ongoing reforms.
He stressed that the 2027 elections should serve as a reflection of Nigeria’s democratic growth and maturity, emphasizing the need for citizens to continue supporting efforts aimed at building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
