President Bola Tinubu has said Nigerians have continued to show resilience and determination despite the difficulties facing the country, describing the nation’s democratic journey as a testament to the strength and unity of its people.
In his Democracy Day message on June 12, Tinubu reflected on Nigeria’s return to democratic rule 27 years ago, noting that many people had doubted whether democracy could survive in a country as diverse as Nigeria.
He said the country’s ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity, once seen as a challenge, has become a source of strength that continues to sustain democratic governance.
The President acknowledged that Nigeria still faces significant economic and social challenges but stressed that citizens have consistently demonstrated an unbreakable spirit in the face of adversity.
According to him, the significance of June 12 goes beyond commemorating a historic election, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and the enduring determination of Nigerians.
Tinubu said the nation’s progress has been shaped by citizens who remained committed to democratic values despite periods of uncertainty and hardship.
He urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to national unity, democratic principles, and the collective pursuit of a better future for the country.
The President also called on citizens to honour the sacrifices of past heroes by supporting efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and promote good governance.
