EFCC Releases Two Obidient Movement Supporters After Questioning Over Alleged Naira Abuse

ABUJA — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released two prominent members of the Obidient Movement, Peter Akah and Oruche Precious, popularly known as Mama Pee, after several hours of questioning over allegations of naira abuse.
The two supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, honoured the EFCC’s invitation at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday. They were released at about midnight after the interrogation and directed to return on Thursday as investigations continue.
The development was disclosed by activist Chidiebere Mark, popularly known as Justice Crack, who accompanied the duo to the EFCC headquarters.
According to him, Akah and Precious arrived at the commission’s office at about 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday and remained there for several hours before they were eventually released shortly after midnight.
“It was a very long day. They were eventually released at around 12:00 a.m. and were asked to return the following day, July 16, 2026,” he said in a post on X.
Concerns had earlier spread across social media after reports emerged that the two Obidient Movement members were being questioned by the anti-graft agency, with supporters expressing worries about their whereabouts.
Providing an update on the matter, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who is representing both Akah and Precious, confirmed that the EFCC’s invitation was connected to allegations of naira abuse.
Effiong explained that the invitation letters, dated June 24, 2026, had initially requested his clients to appear before the commission on July 6, but the meeting was rescheduled to July 15 after his legal team informed the EFCC that the duo would not be available on the earlier date.
He said both clients fully cooperated with investigators during the session and were subsequently allowed to leave after the interrogation.
The lawyer further stated that his clients informed investigators that the items referenced in the allegation were not genuine naira notes but prop money used solely for entertainment purposes.
According to Effiong, the interrogation lasted several hours and was conducted professionally by officials of the commission.
He added that Akah and Precious remain in good spirits and expressed appreciation to Nigerians who showed concern for their safety while they were with the EFCC.
The lawyer also confirmed that both supporters are expected to return to the commission’s headquarters on Thursday as the investigation continues.
The development comes amid recent claims by Peter Obi that opposition figures in the country are facing increasing pressure and restrictions in carrying out their political activities.
The EFCC has yet to issue an official statement on the ongoing investigation.
