The Anambra State Police Command has arrested three suspects, including a man alleged to be a serving officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in connection with armed robbery activities in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday in Awka, noting that the arrests were part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security across the state.
According to Ikenga, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Awkuzu, acting on credible intelligence, carried out a targeted operation on March 21 at about 1:46 p.m., raiding a suspected criminal hideout in Ogidi where the three suspects were apprehended.
The suspects were identified as Francis Anene, 46; Emmanuel Obi, 29; and Okoye Chinonso, 35. One of them is alleged to be a serving member of a security agency.
Items recovered during the operation include two locally fabricated Beretta pistols, four rounds of live 9mm ammunition, and a suspected fake security identity card.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects are members of a criminal syndicate believed to be involved in armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent activities in Ogidi and surrounding communities.
Police authorities also revealed that the suspects are being investigated for possible links to the killing of the late President-General of Ogidi.
In a separate operation, officers attached to the Ozubulu Police Division recovered a suspected stolen white petrol tanker along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway in the early hours of March 17.
The vehicle, found abandoned without a registration number and with its key still in the ignition, is believed to have been left behind by an unidentified individual. Investigations are ongoing to identify the owner and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Ikenga stated that both cases remain under investigation as efforts continue to uncover further details.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, has reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents. He urged members of the public to support law enforcement agencies by providing timely and reliable information to aid crime prevention and control.
