The Anambra State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into an alleged child trafficking incident following the rescue of a female suspect from an angry mob at a private hospital in Obosi.

The suspect, identified as Anurika Nweme, 37, was rescued by Police Operatives attached to the Awada Divisional Headquarters after tensions escalated at Divine Mercy Hospital, Eze Iweka Road, Awada, Obosi.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Thursday, June 25, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that preliminary reports indicated that the suspect allegedly gained access to the hospital premises on the afternoon of June 23, 2026, dressed in clothing resembling that of a nurse.

According to eyewitness accounts, suspicion arose after she was reportedly observed making covert video recordings of newborn babies within the maternity ward.

Hospital staff and concerned individuals at the facility immediately questioned her presence and sought clarification regarding her identity and purpose at the hospital.

The suspect allegedly claimed to be an employee of the medical facility. However, following internal verification by the hospital management, authorities confirmed that she was not affiliated with the institution.

The revelation reportedly triggered outrage among members of the public present at the scene, leading to an attempted mob action before swift intervention by police operatives prevented further escalation.

Police authorities stated that the suspect is currently in protective custody while assisting investigators with efforts aimed at identifying possible collaborators and determining the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Command assured members of the public that investigations remain ongoing and emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all lawful measures are taken to uncover the facts and maintain public confidence in child safety and healthcare environments.

The Police further appealed for calm and urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands, assuring that additional updates would be communicated as the investigation progresses.
