Bayelsa Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo Confirmed Dead

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the death of Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Oboraw-Harievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on Thursday after reportedly collapsing earlier in the day.

The news heightened concerns across the state as reports circulated about the deputy governor’s health. In a statement released Thursday night, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, described the development as deeply shocking.

The Bayelsa State government has not yet issued an official statement regarding his passing.

In its condolence message, the PDP described Ewhrudjakpo as a loyal, dependable, and principled party member whose death has thrown the party—especially its members in Bayelsa State—into deep mourning. The party extended its sympathy to the government and people of the state, praying for the repose of his soul.

According to the PDP statement, Ewhrudjakpo was “an honest and consistent politician” who was guided by conviction, integrity, and strong character throughout his political journey.

Ewhrudjakpo served as Deputy Governor under Governor Douye Diri since 2020, having first been selected as Diri’s running mate in the 2019 governorship election and subsequently re-elected with him in 2023.

His death comes amid recent political tensions in the state. He was notably absent during Governor Diri’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in October. At the time, Diri noted that he would not pressure his deputy to join him in the ruling party.

Before his passing, Ewhrudjakpo had also approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to stop the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from pursuing an alleged impeachment move over his decision to remain in the PDP.
