CAN Hails Late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi for Saving 262 Christians During 2018 Massacre

ABUJA — The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has paid glowing tribute to the late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, recalling his extraordinary act of courage that led to the rescue of 262 Christians during a violent attack in 2018.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association described the late cleric as a symbol of moral bravery whose actions rose above religious divisions at a critical moment in the nation’s history.
According to CAN, Imam Abdullahi made a personal and dangerous decision to shield innocent lives during the massacre, an act the association said left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s collective conscience.
“The late Imam Abubakar Abdullahi will forever be remembered for his rare courage and selflessness in the face of grave danger,” the statement read.
“By choosing to protect innocent lives at great personal risk, he saved 262 Christians during a violent massacre in 2018, standing firmly on the side of humanity when it mattered most.”
CAN noted that the Imam’s intervention went beyond saving lives, stressing that his actions affirmed the sanctity of human life and demonstrated that compassion and conscience can prevail even in moments of extreme violence.
“His actions transcended religious boundaries and powerfully affirmed that the value of human life is sacred above all else,” the association stated.
The statement further described the late Imam’s bravery as a source of renewed hope for peaceful coexistence, saying it strengthened interfaith relations and served as a reminder that unity remains possible in Nigeria.
“This singular act of heroism did more than save lives. It reinforced hope, strengthened interfaith harmony, and reminded our nation that peace is achievable when love, faith, and conscience guide our actions,” CAN added.
CAN recalled that the Imam’s sacrifice and commitment to humanity were formally recognised in 2021, when he was honoured during the association’s Sapphire Anniversary celebrations for his exceptional service.
The association stressed that such acts of courage should not only be remembered but continually highlighted as examples for the nation.
“As we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life devoted to the service of God and humanity,” the statement concluded.
