The Committee of Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) and Medical Directors of Federal Tertiary Hospitals has called for reinforced security measures at health facilities in the wake of recent bomb attacks in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The committee condemned the coordinated explosions that struck several locations in Maiduguri, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, describing the incidents as deeply disturbing and entirely unacceptable.
In a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, the committee’s chairman, Prof. Saad Ahmed, labelled the attacks as barbaric, senseless, and unjustifiable, urging immediate steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Reports indicate that the blasts also affected the Monday Market and the Post Office area in the Maiduguri metropolis, raising serious concern among residents and authorities.
Prof. Ahmed expressed particular alarm over the attack at the hospital gate, stressing that violence within or near healthcare facilities undermines the principle of medical neutrality, endangers lives, and erodes human dignity.
He further stated that any act of violence targeting a healthcare environment constitutes a serious assault on humanity, the healthcare system, and the fundamental principles protecting patients and medical personnel.
The CMDs emphasised the urgent need to secure health institutions nationwide, insisting that hospitals must remain safe spaces dedicated exclusively to saving lives and providing essential medical care.
The committee called on the Federal Government and relevant security agencies to enhance security measures, particularly around healthcare facilities and other critical public infrastructure across the country.
Prof. Ahmed underscored that ensuring the safety of hospitals, healthcare workers, and patients should be a top national priority, requiring coordinated efforts and sustained commitment from all levels of government.
Finally, the CMDs extended condolences to the people and government of Borno State, as well as to the families of victims affected by the attacks, expressing solidarity with those impacted.
