The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has unveiled plans to expand its production capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd, a development that will make it the largest refinery globally upon completion.
Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, announced the expansion during a press briefing in Lagos on Sunday. He stated that work on the expansion would begin immediately and would position the refinery ahead of India’s Jamnagar Refinery, which currently holds the title of the world’s largest.
“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. Once completed, this will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing the Jamnagar Refinery in India,” Dangote said.
The expansion project is expected to generate approximately 65,000 jobs, with 85 percent reserved for Nigerian workers. The refinery will also upgrade its fuel production from Euro V to Euro VI standards, aligning with the highest international environmental benchmarks.
“As part of the project, we are enhancing our production to Euro VI fuel standards, meeting the highest global environmental requirements,” Dangote explained.
Additionally, the refinery’s power generation capacity will double from 500 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts. Dangote also revealed plans to list the refinery on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2026, offering Nigerians the opportunity to invest as shareholders.
Dangote expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his ongoing support of the refinery and noted that the expansion is projected to be completed within three years.
“The expansion is expected to be completed in three years,” he concluded.
