The 68th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government is set to commence at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, with regional leaders gathering to deliberate on the future of the West African bloc.
The high-level summit will feature a Special Debate on the Future of the ECOWAS Community and is expected to focus on pressing regional priorities such as political stability, security cooperation and economic integration across member states.
President of Sierra Leone and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Julius Maada Bio, is chairing the session. He arrived in Abuja on Saturday, according to a brief statement issued by his office.
The statement noted that the summit would address several critical developments affecting the region, with particular attention to recent incidents in Guinea-Bissau and Benin.
Key items on the agenda include discussions on the future direction of the ECOWAS Community, the presentation of the 2025 Annual Report on the State of the Community, and briefings on regional security challenges and ongoing mediation efforts.
Leaders are also expected to review progress on the political transition in Guinea and assess the implementation of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme (ETLS), aimed at boosting intra-regional trade.
The summit is expected to conclude with the adoption of a final communiqué, after which a joint press conference will be held to outline key resolutions and outcomes.
