EFCC Challenges Court Order Returning 27 Properties to Businessman

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed an appeal against a Federal High Court ruling that ordered the release of 27 houses to businessman James Ikechukwu Okwete and his company, Jamec West Africa Limited.

The judgment, delivered on October 31, 2025, by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik in Abuja, directed that the seized properties be returned to Okwete.

In a statement signed by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity, the EFCC confirmed that it has lodged a Notice of Appeal at the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, signaling its objection to the verdict.

Filed on December 1, 2025, and marked Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/348/2025, the EFCC’s appeal seeks an order stopping the enforcement of the judgment while the case is being reviewed by the appellate court.

The application reads in part:
“An order staying the execution of the judgment delivered on October 31, 2025, pending the hearing and determination of the appeal filed on December 1, 2025.”

The commission also asked the Court of Appeal to grant any other orders it considers necessary in the circumstances.

With this appeal, the EFCC aims to ensure that the 27 properties remain untouched until the legal dispute is fully resolved, reflecting the importance the agency attaches to the case.

A hearing date is expected to be scheduled by the Court of Appeal.
