The Federal Government, on Thursday in Abuja, officially inaugurated the Inter-Ministerial Committee tasked with planning and executing the 2025 Democracy Day celebration. The committee was charged with the responsibility of organising a befitting and memorable event that reflects the essence of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
During the inauguration, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, represented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu, emphasised the significance of the upcoming celebration. He noted that the 2025 Democracy Day would serve as an important platform to honour Nigeria’s founding fathers and democratic heroes who made immense sacrifices for the nation’s democratic evolution.
“This year’s Democracy Day is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of our founding fathers in securing independence, as well as the courageous efforts of democratic champions who helped to bring an end to military rule in Nigeria,” he said.
Akume further explained that the annual celebration not only pays tribute to past heroes but also offers the Federal Government a chance to highlight its achievements and share its performance scorecard with the Nigerian people.
He urged the committee members to work in unity and dedication towards delivering a successful event that aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The SGF outlined the terms of reference for the committee, which include planning and executing all approved Democracy Day activities, co-opting relevant individuals or organisations where necessary, and ensuring comprehensive documentation of all activities for future reference. Additionally, the committee is expected to undertake any other assignments that may be required to ensure the successful execution of the celebration.
Activities for the 2025 Democracy Day are expected to reflect the spirit of patriotism, democratic values, and national unity.
