Fubara Pledges Enhanced Collaboration with Nigerian Air Force to Strengthen Security in Rivers State

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reiterated his administration’s commitment to working closely with the Nigerian Air Force to bolster security across the state, with a particular focus on curbing oil theft and other criminal activities.
The governor made the declaration while receiving Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, on his first official visit to Rivers State. Governor Fubara highlighted that the state government’s support for the Air Force, including the donation of an aircraft in 2025, was a strategic decision approved during a State Executive Council meeting to enhance security operations.
He explained that the aircraft, which was previously underutilised by the state, would be better deployed to support security agencies in tackling crime and protecting vital state assets.
Governor Fubara further noted that upgrading the Nigerian Air Force base in Port Harcourt would enhance operational efficiency by enabling discreet air operations, rather than relying on the international airport where strategies could be exposed. He emphasized that improved security is critical for safeguarding lives and property and would ultimately contribute to boosting the state’s revenue.
The governor also reaffirmed the state government’s support for the Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA) in its efforts to build a school for children with special needs. Regarding requests for the transfer of a public primary school and the Mother and Child Hospital located within the Air Force base in Port Harcourt, he stated that the government would conduct the necessary consultations before making a decision.
Governor Fubara praised Air Force personnel for their dedication and service, noting that achieving high ranks in the military is a distinction earned by only a few. He also acknowledged the long-standing partnership between Rivers State and the Nigerian Air Force, which has continued through successive administrations.
In his remarks, Air Marshal Aneke described Rivers State as strategically important due to its oil resources and key federal installations. He assured that the Nigerian Air Force would continue to support the state’s security needs.
Air Marshal Aneke commended the state government’s contributions to the Air Force, including the aircraft donation, provision of residential accommodations, and the resurfacing of the Port Harcourt Air Force base runway to meet world-class standards. He also acknowledged Governor Fubara’s commitment to support the construction of a school for children with special needs, an initiative championed by NAFOWA’s president, the governor’s wife.
However, Air Marshal Aneke requested the transfer of the state primary school and the Mother and Child Healthcare facility near the base to the Air Force, citing the potential to improve educational and healthcare access. He also proposed a collaborative approach to security surveillance, suggesting the deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) operated by trained Air Force personnel.
Highlighting the role of technology in modern security, Air Marshal Aneke stressed that drones and other air platforms have revolutionized warfare, emphasizing that effective security now relies more on technology and strategy than sheer manpower. He added that adopting such technology would allow Rivers State to “fight smart” against security threats.
