The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has dismissed recent remarks comparing its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, with Yoruba self-determination activist Sunday Igboho.
In a statement issued on February 18, 2026, IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, described the comparison as inaccurate and misleading. He was responding to comments made by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, concerning the legal situations involving the two activists.
Powerful stressed that Kanu remains the recognised leader of IPOB and is dedicated to the organisation’s objectives. He maintained that Kanu’s actions and legal challenges should be viewed within the broader context of political activism and self-determination movements.
The IPOB spokesperson also drew parallels with historical figures who faced legal battles during their struggles, noting that judicial proceedings have often been part of political advocacy across different societies.
He urged stakeholders and the public to focus on meaningful dialogue and peaceful engagement in addressing political concerns, rather than making comparisons that could create misunderstandings.
IPOB reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing its objectives through lawful advocacy and public engagement. The group further called on Nigerians to uphold peace, security, and respect for the rule of law.
The statement concluded by emphasising IPOB’s resolve to remain focused on its goals while encouraging all parties to operate within democratic and legal frameworks.
