The Kogi State Government on Tuesday ordered the immediate closure of all primary and secondary schools across the state.
Although no official reason has been given for the sudden decision, there are speculations that the move is connected to planned security operations across the state. Sources said the measure is aimed at preventing possible reprisal attacks by bandits on soft targets, particularly schools.
A message circulated to members of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) by the Kogi State Chairman, Pastor Reuben Jimoh, confirmed that the government had directed that the ongoing midterm break be brought forward to align with the emergency shutdown.
According to the message, schools are expected to resume on February 16, 2026.
“The midterm break for schools has been fast-forwarded, and we shall be resuming on 16/02/2026. Therefore, there will be no school until then. No school should go against this adjustment,” the message read.
Similarly, parents were informed through various school communication platforms of the emergency break. One such notice stated that schools received a directive to proceed on an emergency break effective February 4, 2026, while resumption dates would be communicated later. Parents were also advised to encourage their wards to continue studying at home during the period.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Kogi State Ministry of Education, Solomon Musa, confirmed the closure of schools but declined to disclose the reason behind the decision.
As of the time of filing this report, the state government had yet to issue an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the emergency shutdown.
