In a heartfelt act of generosity, North Constituency I lawmaker, Olufunke Comforter Adeniyi-Olajide, has adopted a four-year-old girl from her constituency, pledging to fund her education for life. The announcement was made during a constituency empowerment and project commissioning programme held in Ibadan.
The emotional pledge came after Adeniyi-Olajide was informed about the child, whose mother reportedly could not afford proper clothing despite the girl’s outstanding performance at a recent community event, where she won a children’s race. Moved by the situation, the lawmaker assured that the child would receive full academic support throughout her schooling.
The event took place at Mount Olivet Grammar School, Ashi-Bodija, and drew government officials, political leaders, community stakeholders, market leaders, youth groups, and residents from across Ibadan North Constituency I.
Beyond the adoption, the programme featured the commissioning of several community development initiatives and a large-scale empowerment scheme. Key projects included the construction of a new office for the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun) at Ashi-Bodija to strengthen local security operations, and the renovation of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) shops at Yemetu, which were recently damaged by fire.
The lawmaker also facilitated the installation of boreholes with generating sets at Yemetu, Oje Market, and Ashi-Bodija to improve residents’ access to clean water. Additionally, solar-powered lights were distributed across strategic locations to enhance public safety and visibility at night.
As part of the empowerment initiative, over 200 trained young entrepreneurs received start-up grants and vocational tools, while traders affected by a recent market fire were awarded cheques totaling ₦700,000. Food items and gas cookers were also distributed to vulnerable residents. In support of education, Adeniyi-Olajide announced free JAMB and NECO registration forms for 20 outstanding students of Mount Olivet Grammar School.
Addressing residents during the event, Adeniyi-Olajide stated, “We are reaching out to the needy because today marks both Valentine’s Day and my birthday. It is important to celebrate with the people I represent.” She emphasized that the projects reflected her commitment to bringing development directly to the communities, adding, “All these projects are about comfort, which my name represents. Christ has come to comfort us.”
She further assured residents that more developmental initiatives would follow if she were given another opportunity to serve the constituency.
The programme was attended by prominent figures, including Dayo Ogungbenro, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, who commended the political maturity of Ibadan North residents and stressed that the projects were for the benefit of all, regardless of political affiliation. Toyin Balogun, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, praised Adeniyi-Olajide’s dedication to women and community development. Other dignitaries included Folajimi Oyekunle (Fola DON) representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency, the Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Seun Olufade, and the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Kazeem Adeniyi Bibiire.
The ceremony concluded with a symbolic cake-cutting session led by Ademola Babalola, former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), marking Adeniyi-Olajide’s birthday in celebration with her constituents.
