Masari Urges Politicians to Embrace Purpose-Driven Politics, Shun Ego and Ambition

Former Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, has cautioned political actors across the country against allowing ego and personal ambition to dominate the political space, urging them instead to embrace politics anchored on purpose, patriotism and national interest.
Masari made the call on Saturday during the 17th Convocation Ceremony of Al-Qalam University, Katsina (AUK), where he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Administration.
Speaking at the event, the former governor warned that recent developments across the world have shown that even long-established democracies with strong institutions can be pushed to the brink when political competition becomes reckless and unrestrained.
“In our own environment, which is characterised by fragile political structures and deep social fault lines, the challenge is even more serious,” Masari said.
He urged political actors to conduct their engagements with restraint, maturity and respect for the rule of law, stressing that public statements should always be guided by decency and the overall national interest.
“I therefore call on political actors across the country to practise politics of purpose. As leaders and custodians of public trust, we must resist the temptation to exploit emotions or inflame divisions for personal gain,” he stated.
Masari emphasised that patriotism must always come before ego and ambition, noting that democratic competition should be about offering citizens credible choices rather than turning politics into a battlefield.
According to him, plural societies are naturally complex and often struggle with deficits in communal trust, making responsible leadership even more critical.
“History teaches us that plural societies are inherently complex. Enlightened leaders must either work together or offer constructive criticism based on superior ideas—ideas that promote good governance, due process, equity, fairness and inclusive development,” he said.
The former governor also offered prayers for the continued improvement of Nigeria’s security situation, describing the prevailing challenges as a painful chapter in the country’s history. He expressed hope that full normalcy would soon be restored nationwide.
