NASU, SSANU Declare Indefinite Strike Over Stalled Talks With Federal Government

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities have announced an indefinite strike scheduled to begin at midnight on May 1, 2026, citing unresolved negotiations with the Federal Government.
The decision was contained in a joint letter dated April 30 and signed by NASU General Secretary and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim. The letter was addressed to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.
According to the unions, the industrial action became necessary following the government’s failure to conclude renegotiations and present a revised offer on allowances before the April 30 deadline.
They acknowledged receiving communication on the withdrawal of an earlier circular proposing a 30 percent increase in the consolidated non-teaching tools allowance. However, they stressed that the central issue in dispute remains unresolved, as no alternative offer has been presented to replace the withdrawn proposal.
The unions also expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the negotiation process, describing it as too slow and not in line with their expectations.
They noted that members had previously mandated their leadership to take decisive action if discussions were not concluded by the end of April. With no agreement reached and no fresh proposal from the government, the unions said they had no option but to proceed with the strike.
NASU and SSANU further accused the Federal Government of failing to prevent the crisis through meaningful engagement, stating that all members across affected institutions are expected to comply fully with the directive for a total and comprehensive industrial action effective May 1, 2026.
