NDLEA Reaffirms Commitment to Tackling Drug Abuse, Trafficking in Katsina

The Katsina State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking across the state.
The assurance was given by the State Commander, Samaila Danmalam, during the Command’s end-of-year press conference held on Tuesday. The event also featured the decoration ceremony of 61 officers who were recently promoted to various ranks within the Command.
Danmalam said the fight against drug-related crimes requires collective responsibility, stressing the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies, community leaders and the general public to make Katsina a safer place.
According to him, the Command believes that effective information sharing, sustained advocacy and community policing would significantly reduce drug offences and help preserve peace across the state.
Highlighting the Command’s achievements in 2025, Danmalam revealed that NDLEA operatives, through intelligence-driven raids and patrols, arrested several individuals involved in drug-related activities, leading to major seizures and the disruption of illicit drug networks.
He disclosed that within the year under review, a total of 1,018 suspects were arrested, comprising 992 males and 26 females.
The substances seized included 1,667.747 kilograms of cannabis, 12.348 kilograms of codeine and 793.66 kilograms of psychotropic substances, amounting to a total of 2,473.755 kilograms.
Danmalam also highlighted the impact of the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative spearheaded by the NDLEA Chairman, Brigadier General Muhammed Buba Marwa (retd.). He said the programme recorded significant achievements, including 203 sensitisation programmes that reached 75,135 beneficiaries, counselling for 451 clients and the rehabilitation of 58 individuals.
On prosecutions, the NDLEA commander stated that the Command successfully arraigned 86 suspects in court and secured convictions against 87 others during the period under review.
Despite the successes recorded, Danmalam noted that the Command continues to face logistical challenges, particularly in the areas of operational vehicles, office infrastructure such as drainage systems, and accommodation for officers across the state.
He therefore appealed to stakeholders, government institutions and public-spirited individuals to support the Command in addressing these challenges to enhance its operational effectiveness.
