Nigeria Now Among World’s Hungriest, Most Insecure Nations — Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening socio-economic condition, describing the country as one of the most insecure and hunger-stricken nations globally.
Obi made the remarks on Saturday in Asaba, Delta State, during the official declaration and integration of the Delta State Obidient Movement into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to him, Nigeria’s challenges have reached an alarming level, with an estimated 150 million citizens currently living below the poverty line — a situation he described as unacceptable for a country with vast human and natural resources.
“Our country today has more people living in poverty than China and India combined,” Obi said. “These two countries have a population of nearly three billion people, while Nigeria has about 250 million, yet we have more people trapped in poverty than both of them put together.”
He further noted that Nigeria has also become one of the most insecure and hungriest countries in the world, stressing that the effects of poor governance are being felt across all segments of society.
Obi called on Nigerians to set aside ethnic and religious differences and unite to rescue the nation from bad leadership in the 2027 general elections.
“This is no longer a time to talk about tribe — no tribe buys bread cheaper. It is not a time for religion — no religion buys bread cheaper. Everyone is suffering,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor also criticised the Federal Government’s economic policies, stating that since the removal of fuel subsidy, the government has borrowed more money than all previous administrations combined.
He insisted that Nigeria is not a poor country but one that has been poorly managed, adding that the ADC is committed to providing practical solutions to the nation’s problems.
“This country is not poor; it is being badly led. We want to do the right thing for the country. Nigeria has suffered enough,” Obi said.
Also speaking at the event, the Deputy National Chairman of the ADC for the South-South Zone, Senator Andrew Uchendu, lamented what he described as Nigeria’s failure across critical sectors, noting that urgent action is required to reverse the country’s decline.
