Obi Urges Federal Government to Take Immediate Action on Rising Terror Threats, Unemployment

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s deteriorating security situation, following the latest report by the Global Terrorism Index, which ranks the country among the most affected by terrorism globally.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page on Thursday, Obi described the findings as a troubling reflection of leadership failures, noting that Nigeria recorded a significant rise in terrorism-related deaths.
He expressed worry that while several countries are making progress in reducing terrorism, Nigeria appears to be experiencing the opposite trend. According to him, the worsening situation is largely due to poor governance, weak institutions, and systemic lapses.
Obi stated that the growing insecurity is a direct consequence of misplaced priorities, corruption, weak enforcement of the rule of law, and the continued neglect of the government’s primary responsibility—protecting lives and property.
The former governor of Anambra State pointed to the multiple security challenges confronting the nation, including the insurgency by Boko Haram, the activities of Islamic State West Africa Province, increasing cases of kidnapping, and persistent attacks by armed bandits, particularly in rural areas.
He lamented that Nigerians continue to lose their lives daily while authorities have yet to take decisive and effective measures to address the crisis.
Questioning the role of government, Obi asked why the loss of lives has become so frequent and seemingly accepted, despite improvements recorded in other parts of the world.
He cautioned against normalising the current level of insecurity and urged leaders at all levels to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete, measurable steps to reverse the trend.
Obi emphasised that ensuring the safety of citizens is a fundamental obligation of government and called for urgent action to restore security and stability across the country.
The Global Terrorism Index remains a widely recognised benchmark for assessing the impact of terrorism worldwide, and its latest report has once again drawn attention to Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges.
