As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, Harris Okonkwo, member representing Idemili North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has expressed strong confidence that former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, will secure the presidential nomination of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Okonkwo made the remarks while addressing journalists in Ojoto during a medical outreach organized by the Annie Okonkwo Foundation for residents of his constituency.
The federal lawmaker, who recently left the Labour Party for the ADC, stated that he and his supporters are committed to ensuring Obi emerges as the party’s presidential candidate.
“I believe Nigerians know what is best for them. The advantage now is that there will be no delegates for the primaries, as the process will either be by consensus or through direct primaries,” Okonkwo said. “This means the people will have the ultimate say in selecting the presidential candidate.”
However, Okonkwo also criticised aspects of the recently amended Electoral Act, arguing that some provisions undermine the freedom of association.
“Freedom of association and political participation are fundamental rights that should not be compromised. I opposed these changes, but the majority prevailed,” he stated.
He further explained that while the law may prevent individuals from officially belonging to multiple political parties, it should not restrict citizens from supporting candidates outside their own parties. “One can belong to a party and still choose to support a candidate in another party. There should be no limit to freedom of association,” he added.
Okonkwo also raised concerns about the management of national resources, urging government officials to prioritise the welfare of citizens. “Our focus should be on how the government handles national resources and the level of extravagance at the expense of the people. In the long run, I believe truth and fairness will prevail,” he said.
