The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will demonstrate its political strength and surprise Nigerians in the 2027 general elections.
Wike made this known on Friday night after inspecting preparations at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome, the venue designated for the party’s National Convention in Abuja.
He confirmed that the convention, scheduled to hold from March 29 to March 30, will proceed as planned, despite internal disagreements within the party. According to him, efforts to reconcile aggrieved members will continue even after the event.
The minister also dismissed concerns over an appeal reportedly filed at the Supreme Court by a faction linked to Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, stating that it would not affect the convention.
Wike emphasised that disagreements are inevitable in a large political organisation like the PDP but noted that mechanisms are in place to address concerns and maintain unity.
“There is room for accommodation. The PDP is a very large party, and its structure is broad enough to carry everyone along,” he said, adding that party leaders are committed to engaging dissatisfied members and resolving their grievances in the interest of the party.
On zoning arrangements, Wike revealed that key positions within the party have already been distributed across regions. He stated that the presidential ticket has been zoned to the South, while the national chairmanship has been allocated to the North, a move he said is aimed at ensuring balance and reducing friction.
He further noted that the party is presenting what he described as a more cohesive front, with stakeholders aligning on a common direction rather than operating along factional lines.
Speaking on the level of preparedness, Wike said arrangements are nearing completion, with organisers about 95 percent ready ahead of the convention. He added that logistics, including seating arrangements for delegates and the VIP section, have been finalised.
The convention is expected to host approximately 2,500 delegates from across the country.
