PDP’s Kasim Mohammed Wins Gwagwalada Chairmanship Election With Over 22,000 Votes

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Kasim Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Chairman-elect of the Gwagwalada Area Council, following the Area Council election held on Saturday in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Mohammed secured victory after polling 22,165 votes in what observers described as a highly competitive contest. His closest challenger, Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), garnered 17,788 votes.
Declaring the results, the Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, confirmed that Mohammed satisfied all legal requirements and was duly elected as chairman.
Akpen noted that the election process was largely peaceful and orderly, despite the intense competition among the candidates.
The PDP’s victory was driven by strong voter support across several wards, where residents turned out in significant numbers to back Mohammed’s candidacy, reinforcing the party’s grassroots strength in the area.
However, the exercise was not without concerns. There were reports from some polling units alleging voter intimidation, vote-buying, and increased security presence. Despite these issues, INEC maintained that the outcome reflected the genuine choice of the electorate.
Following the announcement, celebrations erupted across Gwagwalada, as PDP supporters poured into the streets singing, dancing, and waving party flags. Many described the outcome as a triumph for democracy and the will of the people.
With the results now declared, attention is shifting to the opposition and whether any formal response or legal challenge will be initiated. Meanwhile, INEC has reiterated that due process was followed throughout the collation and declaration of the election results.
