Residents of Maiduguri marked the 2026 Eid al-Fitr celebrations peacefully, despite earlier concerns over renewed bomb attacks targeting civilians and military facilities across Borno State.
Across major Eid prayer grounds in the city, there was a noticeable presence of security personnel to ensure safety during the festivities. Earlier directives by the State Police Command restricted the movement of tricycles, commonly known as Keke Napep, between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Friday. However, shortly after the prayers concluded, several operators were seen back on the roads, defying the temporary ban and resuming activities within the metropolis.
Vice President Kashim Shettima joined Muslim faithful at the Ramat Square Eid Ground in Maiduguri to observe the Eid prayers, which signify the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Speaking after the two Raka’at congregational prayers, Shettima expressed gratitude to God and urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayers for national peace, effective leadership, and sustainable development. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the country, stressing that meaningful development cannot thrive without peace.
The Vice President also offered prayers for those who lost their lives in recent attacks in parts of Borno State and other regions, calling for unity and resilience among citizens.
He was accompanied by the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur, and the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin. Also present were federal and state officials, members of the Borno State Executive Council, lawmakers, and other prominent figures.
The Eid prayer was led by the Imam Idaini of Borno, Imam Shettima Saleh, who delivered a sermon emphasizing the need for continued prayers for peace across the state, the region, and the country.
In his message, the cleric reminded Muslims of the importance of Zakat al-Fitr, urging them to fulfill the obligation due to its spiritual rewards and social significance. He also encouraged the faithful to observe the six days of fasting in Shawwal, noting that it complements the Ramadan fast.
Imam Saleh further highlighted the core values of Islam, calling on believers to uphold selflessness, discipline, unity, generosity, and a renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence.
