Peter Obi Raises Alarm Over Insecurity, Says Politicians Are Prioritising 2027 Elections Over Citizens’ Safety

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation across Nigeria, accusing political leaders of focusing more on preparations for the 2027 general elections than addressing the growing threats to the lives and welfare of citizens.
In a statement shared on his social media platform on Tuesday, Obi lamented the continued captivity of schoolchildren abducted in both Oyo and Borno states, noting that two weeks after their abduction, many of the victims remain in the hands of their kidnappers.
He criticised what he described as the government’s emphasis on announcing rescue efforts rather than ensuring the swift and safe return of the victims to their families.
The former Anambra State governor cited several recent security incidents across different parts of the country as evidence of the deteriorating state of security.
Obi referenced the attack on Gwon-Ajang Village in the Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, where terrorists reportedly killed at least seven people and injured 10 others on Sunday.
He also pointed to an attack on the Ayegunle-Igun community in Kaba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, where armed attackers allegedly abducted more than 25 residents and killed one person during a coordinated raid.
In Anambra State, Obi noted that two police officers recently lost their lives in an attack carried out by armed criminals.
The former presidential candidate further highlighted the abduction of 46 individuals, including 39 students, seven teachers and a school principal, from three schools in the Ahoro-Esinle community of Oriire Local Government Area near Ogbomoso in Oyo State.
He also recalled the kidnapping of between 48 and 51 pupils and students from the Mussa community in Askira-Uba Local Government Area of Borno State by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on May 15, 2026. According to Obi, the victims, made up of nursery, primary and secondary school pupils, have remained in captivity for nearly two weeks.
Expressing frustration over the situation, Obi said political actors appear to be more concerned with future electoral contests than addressing the urgent security challenges confronting Nigerians.
“Meanwhile, amid all these tragic developments, we politicians remain consumed by the next election, paying far more attention to political ambitions than to the safety and well-being of our children and fellow citizens,” he stated.
Obi called for greater commitment from leaders at all levels to tackle insecurity and ensure the protection of lives and property across the country.
