Police Confirm Early Morning Arson Attack on Catholic Church in Cross River

The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed an early morning attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Church located in Katchuan Iruan, Boki Local Government Area of the state.
The incident, which occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, was reportedly carried out by suspected arsonists.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, disclosed that the attackers set parts of the church premises on fire, causing extensive damage. According to him, important church documents and records kept in the sacristy were completely destroyed in the blaze.
In addition to the destruction of church property, the attackers also torched two vehicles parked within the premises — a Lexus RX 350 belonging to the parish priest and a Toyota Corolla.
Eitokpah stated that no arrests have been made so far, as the identities of those behind the attack remain unknown.
He assured that investigations are ongoing to track down the perpetrators, adding that the police have visited the scene, documented the damage with photographs, and formally recorded the case.
The matter has been referred to the Okunde Police Station for further discreet investigation.
The police spokesperson further assured residents that once suspects are identified and apprehended, the public will be duly informed.
