Questions Mount Over NDC’s Independence Amid Legal Battles and Coalition Politics

As political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election continue to gather momentum, renewed attention has shifted to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) following recent legal developments and growing political debate over the party’s independence.
In June, the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, set aside its earlier December 2025 judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC as a political party. The decision generated widespread reactions across opposition circles before it was later overturned by the Court of Appeal, restoring the earlier judgment.
The legal developments have reignited public discussions about the political forces behind the emerging party, as well as concerns previously raised by political insiders regarding its internal structure and future direction.
According to sources familiar with ongoing opposition coalition discussions, there are fears that the NDC could face internal challenges after the emergence of its eventual presidential candidate. Some of the sources also alleged that certain influential individuals associated with the party maintain close relationships with prominent figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, these allegations have not been independently verified, and no publicly available evidence has linked the NDC leadership or its founders to the APC or the Presidency.
Despite the lack of verified evidence, the claims have continued to fuel public debate over whether emerging opposition platforms can remain independent and whether individuals with competing political loyalties could weaken efforts to build a united opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
Political insiders who spoke on condition of anonymity said concerns intensified following the collapse of the coalition arrangement involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.
According to one source, some political actors have become increasingly cautious about the growing divide within the opposition and the decision by some groups to embrace the NDC platform.
The source claimed that influential individuals connected to the party allegedly maintain close ties with members of the ruling establishment, raising fears about the party’s long-term independence.
Another source involved in the broader opposition consultations said the concern extends beyond the party’s official founders and centres on some influential supporters and political associates believed to have longstanding relationships within the APC and the Presidency.
“The concern is not necessarily about the founders,” the source said.
“It is about some major supporters and people around the project who are believed to have sympathies or strong relationships within the Presidency and the APC establishment.”
Political observers say such concerns reflect broader anxieties within opposition circles about the possibility of internal divisions or infiltration that could undermine attempts to build a formidable coalition capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027.
As coalition talks, defections and political negotiations continue across several parties, analysts believe the coming months—particularly during party primaries and further alliance discussions—will provide greater clarity on the strength, independence and direction of the NDC and other emerging political platforms.
