Residents of Zaki Biam in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State are living in increasing fear as criminal activities continue to escalate. The town has witnessed a troubling rise in kidnapping threats, motorcycle theft, and suspected cult operations, leaving many anxious about their safety.
According to a community source who spoke over the weekend, several residents have been receiving alarming phone calls from unknown individuals demanding money. The callers reportedly threaten to abduct anyone who refuses to comply with their demands.
“People are genuinely frightened because these callers sound organized and determined. We urgently need help before the situation becomes completely unmanageable,” the source said.
He further explained that the insecurity in the area is worsened by the presence of a suspected cult group. The group is said to hold frequent meetings at the shop of their alleged leader, situated at the former SSS office along the Yam Market bypass leading to the Mechanic Site.
“These young men gather both in broad daylight and late at night. Their activities raise suspicion, and residents are worried about what they may be planning,” he added.
The increase in motorcycle snatching has also contributed to growing tension in the community. Thieves reportedly target motorcycle riders at night, causing many residents to avoid moving around once it gets dark.
He highlighted that kidnapping threats have intensified the fear. In one case, a POS operator was forced to pay ₦100,000 after receiving threats from criminals who warned that he would be abducted if he failed to pay.
Residents are now calling on security agencies to take immediate action, warning that the situation could worsen if left unchecked.
“We are pleading with the government and security operatives to intervene. Lives and property are no longer safe, and the situation demands urgent attention,” the resident lamented.
Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Udeme Edet, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
