President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of trying to take control of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the party battles an ongoing leadership crisis.
Speaking on Thursday while receiving members of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu linked the internal turmoil within the ADC to what he described as Atiku’s political style.
Referring to Atiku’s past role as chairman of Nigeria’s privatisation council, Tinubu questioned the outcomes of key privatisation efforts under his watch. He cited the Delta Steel Company and Ajaokuta Steel Company as examples, asking whether they are functioning effectively today.
He went further to suggest that similar tactics are now being applied within the political space, alleging that attempts were being made to “privatise” a political party, but were resisted by its original stakeholders.
The president’s remarks come as the ADC continues to grapple with a prolonged leadership dispute that has worsened since an opposition coalition took over the party’s structure in July 2025.
The crisis has split the party into multiple factions, including groups aligned with former Senate President David Mark, former Deputy National Chairman Nafiu Bala, and Ogga Kingsley.
