President Bola Tinubu has attributed part of Nigeria’s security challenges to the failure of governance at the grassroots level, stressing that effective local government administration is essential for national growth and stability.
Speaking during his Democracy Day address on Friday, the President said his administration had prioritised financial autonomy for the country’s 774 local government councils to ensure that democratic governance delivers meaningful benefits directly to citizens.
Tinubu noted that democracy loses its value when people do not experience its impact in their daily lives, adding that strengthening local governments remains a key step towards improving governance and development across the country.
According to him, ineffective administration at the local level has hindered national progress and contributed to the insecurity currently affecting many communities.
The President said the Renewed Hope Agenda was designed to ensure that governance reaches all Nigerians, regardless of their location, background, or social status.
He further reflected on the responsibilities of different generations in Nigeria’s history, stating that while the nation’s founding fathers secured independence and the June 12 generation fought for democracy, the present generation must focus on achieving prosperity for all citizens.
Tinubu called on Nigerians to remain united and committed to national development, urging them to reject division, pessimism, and hopelessness.
He expressed confidence that through unity and collective effort, Nigeria can become a nation bound by a common purpose, strengthened by its diversity, where justice is accessible, freedom is protected, and opportunities are available to every citizen.
