Trump Hails UK as Closest Ally While Hosting King Charles Amid Iran War Tensions

United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday described Britain as America’s closest ally as he welcomed King Charles III to the White House for a state visit, despite ongoing tensions over the conflict involving Iran.
Speaking during a ceremonial reception marked by a 21-gun salute, Trump struck a conciliatory tone, contrasting sharply with his recent criticism of the British government for declining to support US actions against Tehran.
“In the centuries since we won our independence, Americans have had no closer friends than the British,” Trump said, referencing the 250th anniversary of America’s declaration of independence from British rule.
Reaffirming long-standing diplomatic ties, he described relations between both countries as a “special relationship,” a phrase historically associated with wartime cooperation and first popularised by Winston Churchill after World War II.
The US president also commended the British armed forces, noting their long history of cooperation with American troops, despite previously making critical remarks about Britain’s military capabilities.
The high-profile ceremony featured a military parade, anthem performances, and a flypast by US fighter jets, witnessed by Trump, King Charles, Queen Camilla, and First Lady Melania Trump.
The visit continues with a scheduled address by King Charles to the US Congress, where he is expected to call for unity and renewed cooperation between both nations amid recent diplomatic strains.
The monarch’s speech comes at a sensitive time, following disagreements between Washington and London over the Iran conflict. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has faced criticism from Trump for opposing military involvement, alongside differences on immigration and energy policies.
Security around the visit has been heightened, coming shortly after a shooting incident at a White House Correspondents’ event attended by the US president.
Earlier in the visit, Trump hosted King Charles and Queen Camilla for a more informal gathering at the White House, including a tour of the grounds. The state visit is expected to conclude with a formal dinner and further bilateral engagements aimed at reinforcing diplomatic ties.
