Social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has responded to the controversy surrounding his invitation to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference by appearing in a lawyer’s wig and gown in a satirical video.
Otse shared the video on Instagram on Friday, where he was dressed in the traditional black barrister’s gown, white neck tabs and wig, while also wearing dark sunglasses.
The three-and-a-half-minute video appeared to parody legal proceedings, with Otse presenting himself as a lawyer and making sarcastic remarks about the criticism that followed his appearance at the NBA conference.
The activist had attended the conference, themed “Be Your Limit,” where his presence generated controversy among lawyers and members of the public.
Some questioned why Otse, who is not a lawyer, was invited to an event organised primarily for legal professionals.
Otse, however, defended his participation, maintaining that his experience and advocacy, particularly on insecurity, gave him a basis to contribute to the discussions at the conference.
In the latest video, he mocked those who focused on his lack of legal qualification rather than the issues he raised during the event.
“If I may, my lords, since you people decided to ignore all the points I raised at the NBA, all the points I raised about the insecurity, the people benefiting, you people decided to distract yourself by judging me and saying I was not fit to be there because I’m not a lawyer,” he said.
His latest appearance appeared to be a direct response to the backlash, using humour and satire to revisit the debate over his invitation and participation at the NBA conference.
