Woman Arrested for Allegedly Killing Husband’s Two-Month-Old Son in Benue

A 25-year-old woman, identified as Erdoo Ugede, has been arrested by the police for allegedly killing a two-month-old baby boy believed to be the son of her husband’s alleged mistress in Ankyoov, Ikyogbaji Council Ward of Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to sources in the community, the incident occurred after the suspect allegedly invited the child’s mother and her infant to live with her in her matrimonial home, despite knowing the child was fathered by her husband.
Residents said the suspect, who reportedly has no children of her own, persuaded the woman and her baby to move into the family house. Her request reportedly did not raise suspicion among relatives or neighbours, who believed she had accepted the situation.
A community source said the child’s mother had gone to a nearby market on the day of the incident, leaving her two-month-old son in the care of the suspect.
The source alleged that while the mother was away, the suspect attacked the infant with a hard object, inflicting fatal injuries.
“The baby’s cries attracted neighbours, who rushed into the house and found the child in critical condition. They prevented the suspect from fleeing before alerting other residents,” the source said.
The infant was later confirmed dead.
The incident sparked outrage in the community, with some angry youths reportedly attempting to assault the suspect. However, other residents intervened and insisted that she be handed over to the police.
Officers from the Aliade Police Division responded to the scene, arrested the suspect, and took her into custody for investigation.
As of the time of filing this report, the Benue State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident. Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, for comment were unsuccessful.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death are ongoing.
