YSU Explains Viral Photo of Students Sleeping Outdoors, Cites Ongoing Hostel Renovation

The management of Yobe State University (YSU) has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral photograph showing some students sleeping outdoors within the institution’s premises, stating that the development is temporary and not indicative of a broader accommodation crisis.
This clarification was made on Wednesday by the Focal Person for Digital and Strategic Communications to Governor Mai Mala Buni, Hon. Yusuf Ali, in a statement shared on his official Facebook page.
According to the statement, while the photograph circulating widely on social media is genuine, it has been misinterpreted by many as evidence of a severe shortage of hostel accommodation on campus.
The university explained that the situation is a result of ongoing renovation and upgrade works being carried out in several hostels as part of efforts to improve students’ living conditions.
“The management of Yobe State University wishes to address the viral photograph circulating on social media showing some students sleeping outside within the university premises,” the statement read.
“While the image is authentic, it is important to clarify that it does not reflect a widespread accommodation crisis, but rather a temporary situation arising from ongoing hostel renovation and facility upgrade projects across the campus.”
The institution noted that the ongoing comprehensive refurbishment of hostel facilities has temporarily reduced the number of available bed spaces for students.
It further stated that the prevailing heat conditions have also contributed to the situation, as some students have voluntarily chosen to stay outdoors at night for comfort.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sani Isa, was quoted as confirming that hostel allocation is currently in progress, with deliberate efforts being made to ensure that affected students are accommodated as quickly as possible.
The university also disclosed that measures are being put in place to decongest high-demand hostels, particularly the Abuja Hostel, to ease pressure on available spaces.
YSU management reassured students, parents and members of the public that the issue is being actively addressed and remains under control.
It stressed that no student has been abandoned and that every necessary step is being taken to provide safe and adequate accommodation for all students.
The institution urged the public to disregard misleading narratives surrounding the viral image and advised that only official communication channels should be relied upon for accurate information.
The statement added that the university, under the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni, remains committed to the welfare, safety and academic success of its students, while appreciating the patience and understanding of the university community.
