Governor Dauda Lawal has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development was confirmed on Monday in a statement issued by the governor’s media aide, Nuhu Anka, who said the decision followed extensive consultations with political stakeholders across the state.
According to the statement, the state government and the PDP family in Zamfara informed the public about the political development after the governor held wide-ranging discussions with political leaders, elders, and supporters.
The statement explained that the governor reached the decision after careful consideration and in what he described as the best interest of stability, progress, and sustainable development for Zamfara State.
It added that persistent internal crises within the PDP at both the national and state levels played a major role in the decision.
According to Anka, the party has been facing leadership disagreements and structural challenges that have remained unresolved, creating uncertainty that could negatively affect governance and service delivery in the state.
The governor also reiterated his commitment to improving security in Zamfara and stressed the need to align with a political platform that would encourage greater unity and closer cooperation with the Federal Government.
The statement further revealed that the final meeting leading to the decision took place at the Government House in Gusau. The deliberations were coordinated by the deputy governor alongside senior government officials and key political stakeholders.
While appreciating members of the PDP for their cooperation and support over the years, the governor noted that the current political situation and unresolved disputes within the party made it necessary for him to take what he described as a decisive step in the interest of good governance and the future of the state.
Lawal said his move to the APC is aimed at strengthening unity, enhancing security efforts, accelerating development, and ensuring that Zamfara benefits from improved collaboration with the Federal Government.
