Shettima Urges Nigerian Pilgrims to Uphold National Pride and Dignity

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerian pilgrims embarking on the 2025 Hajj to conduct themselves with the utmost dignity, honour, and unity as representatives of the country in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Speaking on Friday at the flag-off ceremony for the first batch of pilgrims at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, Shettima emphasized that the pilgrims are not merely spiritual voyagers but also ambassadors of Nigeria.

“Our dear intending pilgrims, know that you are more than spiritual travellers. You are ambassadors of Nigeria,” Shettima said. “You carry with you not only your faith but also the pride and dignity of this nation. Your conduct, your devotion, and your unity must reflect the values we hold dear. This responsibility is not light. It is noble.”

Reassuring the pilgrims of federal support, the Vice President disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made all necessary provisions to ensure a successful and stress-free Hajj operation. He described this commitment as part of the administration’s broader promise to protect and uplift Nigerians across all spheres.

Shettima also charged the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and other relevant stakeholders to work collaboratively to meet the high expectations surrounding the pilgrimage.

“The success of this Hajj operation rests on all our shoulders,” he stated. “If any of us falters—whether it be a logistical officer neglecting a detail or a pilgrim forgetting the dignity of the flag he carries—the consequences could turn what should be a joyful experience into yet another avoidable catastrophe.”

He further commended Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State for fostering an inclusive environment marked by religious tolerance and mutual respect. Shettima described the governor’s support as a reflection of a Nigeria that is gradually coming into harmony with itself.

In agreement, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, praised Governor Uzodinma for his efforts in promoting peaceful co-existence and religious harmony in Imo State.

“This event sends a powerful message that in Nigeria, we still have leaders who prioritize unity,” the Sultan said. “Today, Christians, Muslims, and even those of no faith are gathered here for this significant national event. It’s a reminder that for Nigeria to move forward, mutual respect is essential.”

The Sultan reiterated that religious tolerance and national unity are crucial elements for the country’s progress and urged all Nigerians to embrace these values.
